Should I geld?
  • I got quite a few colts this year from my 4 exceptional producing studs. Two of them papered A so I know that I am keeping them for sure. I am not sure what to do about the rest that papered B. I comparison tested a few of them and gelded the ones that were as good or worse than their sire, but I'm not sure if it is worth keeping the ones that are better than their sire because they still papered B. Should I just keep my two A papered colts? Or do I test and keep any that are better than their sire?? Help!

  • That's the sort of judgement call that only you can make. :) A's are better than B's....but maybe the B's have something about them you like. Only you can figure out if you really want them enough to keep them as stallions.

Some people would tell you to cull everything that didn't paper higher, others only worry if they comparison test higher. For me, it depends on the lines in question and what my goals are for that one line.

  • The question to ask yourself is: will you breed to the B papered stallions when they are of age, or not? Do they have anything that will cause you to pick them over one of the A papered stallions (eg. special genes the A's missed, or all the A's are sibling to your mares)? If not, you are better off gelding them and adding them to your show string.
