Guide to height & bone weight?
-
Height and bone weight are both new additions since the last time I played and I was wondering if there was a definitive guide somewhere - primarily about what range you can get out of parents with certain heights or weights.
For instance, I'm trying to decide whether to keep or sell this filly:

She got dun AND splash and is heavier than either of her parents, which I love, but she came out as a draft whereas both of her parents are tall cobs. I'm trying to breed for cobs. What would I have to breed her to in the future to ensure that her foals are cobs? Is it worth keeping her? -
just keep breeding to cobs and reject the foals that aren't cobs.

Both her sire and dam are 14.2 hands, right on the edge between pony and horse, so it's not very surprising that she ended up horse height. It is easier to keep pony offspring small when the parents are 14 hands or below to start with. If you breed her to very short cobs, her offspring will have a better shot a falling back into the pony height.Thanked by 1fantasyfarms

In terms of weight, I don't know what the official range is, but in my experience if you breed horses of (nearly) equal weights, the foal's weight can be approximately 0.25 higher or lower than the parents. This girl is by a 1.25 sire and out of a 1.24 dam, and she her bone weight is 1.50 (which, incidentally, makes her a warmblood rather than a riding horse like her parents). I don't know what type of variation you can get to that number when the parents are not of similar weights.
A bone weight up to and including 1.49 is a riding horse/riding pony. Weights of 1.5 through 2.49 are a warmblood or sport pony, and weights of 2.50 and above are drafts and cobs.Post edited by Helia at 2016-03-25 15:50:30
