Density cut offs?
  • I can't seem to locate a post saying what the cut offs are for the new density sizes. Just from casual perusal of my stock I am seeing somewhere around 3.50 as the start of bone density for the heavies (Cobs/Drafts) but I was wondering what the warmblood and Light horse cut offs are. Might give me a better idea of potential outcomes when breeding.
  • In my searches for mares for sales it looks like 1.4 and under are Riding Horse/Pony, 1.5-2.5 are Warmbloods and 1.6 and over are drafts.
  • Thanks! My post was miss typed... I meant 2.50 for drafts. I like the heavies but most of my horses are of course warmbloods. Good to know the cut offs so I can try for heavier bone in my existing lines.
  • Because bone weight is into the hundredths, the cutoffs are actually a little more specific than that. Riding horses and ponies go up to 1.49, warmbloods and sport ponies are 1.50-2.49, and drafts and cobs are 2.50 and above.

Two riding horses with bone weights of 1.23 and 1.25 can produce a warmblood foal (1.50 bone density), so I imagine there's about 0.25 variability in the foal you can expect from any two horses. I would assume the same holds true with warmbloods trying to breed into drafts.

  • Yes.. I had that happen to me.. I have a Gen 3 horse turn up as a warmblood even though all of his ancestors save one were light riding horses. confused me to no end.
