Don't worry about your horses "clustering" when showing, if a horse is going to lose to another one of your horses, it'd also lose to someone else's. :)

And showing has also been heavily revamped recently, a horse's total acquired points actually have quite a bit of value now, and they can gather points in lower placings than you'd think would be any good. So it's really not so critical for them to finish in the top three places as it used to be.
