Frame
-
What does Frame mean for horse colors? Thanks!! :)
-
Frame is a gene that impacts pinto patterns only. It'll try to darken the "outline" of the horse (hence the name frame) so that the horse's topline, chest, underline & legs are dark. Note...it *tries*. It doesn't always succeed depending on what other genetics are involved.
It does not add any white by itself, and it doesn't impact solid horses, apps, or roans. So it does an excellent job of hiding.
A lot of white patterns or a high expression of one white pattern can overwhelm it and hide it even with pinto markings. So while sometimes you will see frame and know it's there, not seeing it doesn't mean it isn't there. It's very good at hiding.
Which is problematic, because if you breed two frame horses together and both parents pass on their frame, the baby will die. (This is true in real life and the game both.)
This is a pretty obvious frame, note the dark "outline" that is around most of the horse?

This one doesn't really show it much.
