Liver and Red question
-
I was going through my horses with an eye on culling.
I am puzzled. This mare http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=3943164 should be liver, but her color test says she is red. Her sire is liver and has one Sty gene, which she has. However, based on her sire's color and the fact he has one Sty gene, he is homo DP, so therefore she should be liver, since she should have inherited 1 DP gene from her sire. What did I miss?
It has always been my understanding that when livers have 1 Sty gene and are as dark as liver chestnuts with two Sty genes and 1 copy of DP, it means that the aforementioned 1 Sty liver is homo for DP. -
Chestnut horses have to have three alleles from the two coat darkening genes to be Liver. So if they are heterozygous for Sooty (SSty or SSty) and homozygous for DP they will be Liver. And they will also be Liver if they are homozygous sooty (SstySsty) an heterozygous for DP. However, if they have only one of each, they will carry the DP and have a 50% chance of passing it on to a foal, but they will not be Liver Chestnuts themselves.
So your mare got Sooty from her dam and a DP from her homozygous sire, but did not get her sire's Ssty as well. Therefore she has only two darkening alleles, not the necessary three. Your mare's sire is heterozygous Ssty and homozygous DP from his appearance. The dam is homozygous Ssty and carries no DP to pass on, since she is not a Liver Chestnut.
The first allele listed for a gene in the color test comes from the sire, the second one comes from the dam, by convention.Post edited by SandyCreekAcres at 2016-05-23 13:41:03 -
Ah ok, thanks.
