Gelding vs.Stallion
-
If I had a herd of 100 normal create stallions in a barn, shown twice weekly, and 100 normal create geldings in a barn shown twice weekly, how much of a profit difference would there be?
-
It depends.
There's a wide range of random showing ability for foundations. Some normal create stallions are 100% perfect show horses too, and some normal create geldings are really really poor show horses. Some just have more potential. Some are going to level off faster than others.
Are you asking what the gelding showing bonus is? Nobody but Ammit really knows for sure, but it takes a while for it to accumulate enough extra training to be noticeable.
If I were going for straight show horses to stuff in a barn and forget about, I'd scour the sales board for cheap lined horses with PTs over 10, or the potential to be over 10, who cost less than 3000 hbs. After I ran out of those, I'd go buy all the 3 year old chestnuts in the foundation rescue and spay/geld them and then forget about them.
See, 100 stallions would really clutter up my advanced breeding lab options and mostly I believe in having show horses I can stick in a barn and forget about.Thanked by 1Redbud -
One thing I can tell you is that I have 9 year old foundation stallions that are leveled off and 9 year old foundation geldings that are still in training. They all had PT scores of at least 9.5. It appears that one of the benefits of gelding (or spaying) is that the horse will train longer before leveling off, and so may reach a slightly higher showing level.Thanked by 1BlackMagic
