Culling herd/keeping herds small
-
Now I am getting to the point where I've realize I may be starting to get a little overloaded on horses. ^_^'
So I'd like tips and tricks from everyone! :D How do you manage your herds(also knowing how many horses you have would help)? -
Be ruthless about culling foals that weren't exactly what you were looking for out of that cross, turn 'em into show ponies.
You don't need to breed every stallion 50 times every year - lots of people do that, but you have a lot of years to get some babies by that stallion, no need to rush it.
Unless there's something extra super special about her genetics, there's really no need to keep breeding foundation mares over and over. If you get something you want to breed out of her, turn her into a show horse or put her up for public use. Same for lined mares if you don't mind letting the public use them. No need to get 5 and 10 foals out of most mares.
