You do not have to feed or otherwise care for your horses. If you want them to reach their full showing and earning potential they will need to be trained once a week and shown twice a week, but they don't die if you fail to do so, you just end up making less money from showing them. They do have a chance of dying at the start of each game year beginning when they turn 18, but some horses live well beyond that. The oldest horses currently in the game are 28 years old.

Inactive free accounts do get deleted after a time. I'm not certain of the time the account has to go without you logging in, but I'm fairly sure it is at least 3 months.
