Should I sell my daily herd helper foals?
  • I toook someones advice to do the daily herd helper and sell the horses.
    I did it and here's what I got http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=4312992
And I bred him with my mare since he was so pretty (my mare- http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=4309100 )
And they had a BEAUTIFUL baby.
I did one more herd helper and got this- http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=4312991
So should I sell them? How much are they worth? I'm a newbie trying to raise money

  • Oh and all of the horses are proven consistent stallions that could go either way and passed the stallion test. Even the foal had the same stats
  • A majority of DHH (daily herd helper) creates will be common, readily available genes that won't go for very high numbers. Exceptionally Perfect, Exceptional Producers, Perfect Foundations, and any Rank Special foundation that has not been bred and is also under 4 years old typically sell better than any others. Rank Special is just that, a herd helper that is special(rare) and therefore prized by many. That being said, if everyone is getting the same Rank Special, which happens during certain events (Christmas, Friday the 13th, etc), then the value will go down or up based on people's preferences of which genes they carry.

A smart thing to do is keep all foundation horses you create, stick them in a pasture, and auction the foals. The auction has a buyer that will purchase foals for a base price of 2250 and phase them out of the game. As it only costs 500hbs per breeding in the pasture this is a sizable profit. Newer players also rid themselves of snipped(geldings/spayed mares) believing that they have no use. They do! :) Snipped horses generally do better in their shows as they receive a training bonus when you hit the Train My Horses button on the side panel and then press Train This Horse. You generally want a ratio of 1 intact horse for every 3 snipped horses you own. Keeping snipped horses and showing both those and your intact horses ensures that you get a bigger show bonus every day.

In my opinion, I would keep them all and show them, unless you have a particular colour you're breeding for.

  • Quoting the price of a horse in this game is difficult. There are many factors players look at when choosing to buyers look at, and not all of those factors will be the same every day of the year. The demand for certain colors and genes are always changing, and the game will go through phases as the genetics continue to expand.

I'm my opinion, though, I would hang on to your exceptionally producing (ExPro for short) mare. She will produce better quality foals compared to most normal creates.

As for the other two, you can use the horse search, and put in their genetic information to find horses that are for sale with similar characteristics. This can give you an idea of what to price them as. Or you can always put them up for sale and advertise them in the sales list, noting that you are open to negotiate prices.

Show horses really are the best way to make money on here, but it may take a while to see the reward. When in doubt, you can always keep them around to bring in more points.

  • I'm going to echo what the previous posters did, but I'm going to address your post a little bit differently. Specifically your comment, "I'm a newbie trying to raise money."

The only way to make good, steady money in this game is to show your horses. Period.

Occasionally you can make a few quick bucks by getting lucky and getting a DHH (yours or a share of someone else's) that another player is specifically looking for and has made a general offer already to buy, but that's often very specific and just randomly offering your general creates isn't going to achieve the same effect. Foundation horses, the ones you generate via Create A Horse, are just that: foundation horses. They're a known quantity when it comes to breeding and showing ability, more or less.

You can't get the really rare, expensive (please note that expensive is not the same as valuable) genes through Create A Horse, either. They can only be found in the GMT lab, or when Ammit holds special sales for real cash.

Occasionally you can make a few quick bucks by getting lucky and winning the create lottery, too... but the create lottery is just that. You literally win money sometimes when you create horses.

I'm not saying any of this to try to discourage you though. ALL of us were new players once, some of us recently, some of us back when dinosaurs still roamed the imaginary pastures. (Actually that gives me an idea for another thread...) The game has changed tremendously over the years to make it accessible to new players, but one thing has remained true ever since I started, almost a decade ago:

SHOWING is where the money is. Show all of your horses. Don't sell them. Every time you show them they win points. They keep those points forever. Those points directly translate into income for your barn every day. If you sell them, you lose the points; they go with the horse to whoever buys them.

At the end of this month, a hard money cap is coming into the game. None of us will be able to have more than 9,999,999 hbs. I'm sure that sounds like a lot of money to you, but you'd have to add two digits to it to know how much money I had a month ago. Trust me when I say that I didn't get there by selling horses, and neither did anybody else who is going to be affected by this money cap.

Show your horses. Use your money to buy Investment Vouchers (IVs.) Use those IVs to buy barns. Fill those barns with more horses. Show those horses. Use that money to buy more IVs...

This is how you win the game. :D

  • Ok thank you for all the responses! I am going to keep all the horses I got and gelded/spayed the ones that needed to be. The only one I'm selling is a foal that came out as a warmblood but I only do sport ponies right now so I put him in the auction
  • And the one foal I'm selling didn't do well in his show because he tested better as a breeding stallion so I'm not losing any points
