What color is my AQHA filly?
-
This seems like a good place to talk about genetics, since everyone seems to know a lot about them! :)
So, here is my question: I have a filly by a red dun stallion and out of a fleabitten gray mare. When she was born she almost looked bay, but now (a year later) she is changing color. She is registered Gray and I was told she is a "rose gray" when I got her, but some people think she will end up being red roan. Is it even possible for her to be roan? How would I tell the difference?
Thanks for any help in advance! -
Posting a photo or a link to photos will help members be able to answer your question as well. If you were told that she is rose grey, that most likely means that the mother is homologous for the gray gene which means her daughter must carry the gene as well. Rose grey usually refers to a red based coat color that will grey out. If I'm wrong I am sure someone here will correct me since I am no where near an expert. I really do suggest posting photos though.

Roan horses are born roan with dark heads and legs, and will have approximately the same ratio of white hairs to colored throughout their lives except for seasonal variations in their coat (which may be significant, with winter coats typically showing less white than summer). Gray horses are born dark and develop progressively more and more white hairs evenly over the entire horse throughout their lives. If your horse is getting more white hairs each time she sheds she is gray.Breeding high quality Sheldasen horses in all the fancy colors.

Just a quick correction, roan foals are born with out clear roaning and become roan on their first shed.
Also being roan does not mean her mother must be homozygous. Just that she had the gene.
That cross could produce a roan if the dam is hiding the roan gene under the gray. It is more likley the foal is just gray though.Need to contact me? Read this first.

All of you have been so helpful. Thank you! -
Not a great photo to tell color, but dark enough to probably be gray.Need to contact me? Read this first.

Yeah, my guess is grey. Rose grey is just a term. All grey horses will go white if they live long enough, and yours looks like she is greying pretty fast.ID 195859

My guess would be she will be grey. I have raised many horses that have turned out to be grey or roan with one strawberry grey in the mix. How we could always guess color when they were young is by looking around their eyes. Usually the babies that will go grey will start showing dark around their eyes with grey hairs around their eyes as well. The roan horses usually do not, they stay the same color as the rest of the face around the eye. Other than that grey vs. roan babies look pretty similar. I would also guess that she won't be a strawberry grey because of the blue grey coloring on her hip already. My strawberry grey kept the red with grey until she went almost white

If she looked like a bay, the mother may be a black based gray. If both the father (a red dun) and the mother were red based, then wouldn't the filly have been red colored as a foal, having only red based parents? The picture looks like she was bay, with a darker looking mane (Unless the gray gene is causing it to do that, I don't know enough to say so). So if she is bay based, then she definitely would not be a strawberry gray.Post edited by KerredansCorral at 2016-10-20 17:04:27Was Rebecca Iavelli on the old forum

Think! - It's not illegal yet. -
I've always heard it called rose gray or strawberry roan. She never said one way or the other if the damn was ee or E_Post edited by Ammit at 2016-10-20 18:08:43Need to contact me? Read this first.

Thank you all for your comments! That picture of her was from last year, and I believe that she was considered a bay before she started graying. I put a recent picture of her on pinterest so I'd have a link to it, though it's still not very good quality.

Also, I have a link to her dam's pedigree, which says that the dam's sire was red dun and grandsire was chestnut. http://www.allbreedpedigree.com/wimpy+sugar+bug
Is rose gray and strawberry roan the same thing? -
No rose gray is a pinky red stage some grays go through. It is not related to strawberry roan (chestnut roan) in any way.
That pedigree info does not tell you if the dam of your horse carried E (the black gene) or not. She could be Ee.
Looking at the current photo it appears you foal is red based not bay. Gray foals are often born dark but all the red tones in her mane suggest she is ee not Ee :)
She's a good looking girl. :)Post edited by Ammit at 2016-10-22 07:10:54Need to contact me? Read this first.
