You can send a private message in two ways in this version of the game.

Underneath the player's name you will see a small black "Message." If you click there, a Private Message box for that player will open up.

Or, you can click on "Inbox" in the top menu bar, click on the "Start New Message" button at the far right, then type in the name of the person you wish to send the message to.
