I try to match mine as often as possible, and I'm up to 7th and 8th generation horses. I've found that the higher the generation, the harder it is to get stallions, probably because mare quality slips as time goes on. When I don't have stallions of the right generation, I breed backwards ONE step, so my 7th gen mares were seeing 6th gen stallions.

A mare that is the equivalent of a star-papered stallion would, herself, be gold-papered.
