Why can't I GMT this colt?
-
So I tried GMTing this yearling colt http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=4339997 but it didn't work. The only gene that I could change was Pangare -- I tried every gene just to see if any of them would work, and that was the only one that gave me the option to change it. Why would this be the case? And why Pangare and not any other gene? Thanks in advance!User ID: 225765

What genes were you trying to change, exactly.
Perhaps this is what is happening:
If the sire is homozygous for a specific allele, you cannot change the allele that the foal received from him. The same thing goes for the dam.
So if a sire is homozygous for EE, and the dam is homozygoux ee, then you cannot change the foal's Extension gene to either ee or eE or EE. The first letter in the pair is the contribution of the sire, and the second one is the contribution from the dam.
ETA: I just checked out the sire and dam. Except for Pangare and Sooty, they are both homozygous for everything listed, so no, you will not be able to change the alleles they have passed on to their son.Post edited by SandyCreekAcres at 2016-10-15 07:24:26 -
That makes sense! I didn't realize that I needed to take the sire and dam into consideration. Thank you very much!User ID: 225765

You're welcome. Foundation horses, you can add anything to or change anything on, as long as they're under 5 and have no living foals. Lined horses, however, can only have alleles handed down from their parents, just like real life.
