Pasture question
  • When did pastures first come out? I'm trying to figure out max age for mares that would have been pasture bred. I'm eyeballing my higher generations. I don't think they're progressing as well as they should, since most of my higher generation lines are from older lines that existed for quite a while before pastures.

Are there differences between non-pasture lines and lines that are entirely pasture bred? Do the pasture bred lines progress better?
  • The pasture use is simply more likely to give you intact foals than "better". Each mare has a breeding range the the foals are produced from, having a mare in pasture simply moves up the bottom but does not increase at the top. If the lines were good enough to stay intact back then (or have been set to go through Strict Mare Advice since that is quite new) they should be the same quality even though they did not have pasture access then.

  • Is there a way to re-run older mares through the new SMA?
  • I know there was a way because I did it at one point, but for the life of me I can't find it. I'm hoping someone else can find it for you.
  • I think Ammit gave us a link that would reset all mares to untestes so that you could run them through SMA again.

  • Where would that link be?
  • As far as I know running through basic mare testing does not keep you from using SMA. You can still use it again after. But here is the link to run through SMA a second time. http://www.huntandjump.com/retest_mares.php

  • Oh, thanks. That was just what I needed, all my older mares had been run through SMA but that was before it got tightened up.

  • Thanks so much, I always run all my mares through SMA. However, the new SMA is already catching some of my older mares that had previously passed SMA before you tightened it up. Yay!
  • Oh wow, a blue papered mare got caught by SMA. She was 4th generation, though. She might have been a good mare on her own merits, but compared to her dam, not so much, I suppose.
  • I lost a lot of my older blue papered mares due to the re-testing, but at the same time, I feel... strangely liberated. I know it will help me because it will help improve my mare lines.
  • A bunch of my gold mares got caught by retesting. It's for the best, really.
  • I totally have to agree, it's for the best. I'm happy that I retested all my mares because I wasn't sure which mares were good compared to their dams, and running them through the new SMA eliminated that problem for me. The blue papered mares that remained are the best of them, no question about it now. I lost a few papered mare lines that had 4th gen, 3rd gen and 2nd gen blue papers, but if the 4th and 3rd gen mares weren't that much better than their 2nd gen ancestor to pass the new SMA, then they weren't really worth keeping. So retesting took care of that.
