I had to buy my upgrade this year by using IV's, and I put a lot of focus on showing all of my horses. This included horses I have out on pasture. I would rotate my non-pature mares with my pasture mares every week. Also, I tried to avoid buying any horses that wouldn't have a significant impact to my showing bonus, or making any new creates. I avoided paying for anything that wasn't a show fee or an IV. It may take a while, but it's more reliable than trying to sell off horses.

Also a good tip is to create every rank special from ammit that you can, and sell them. Most of them go for prices between 10 000-150 000hb each, and will give you good money for IVs.
