Culling Stallions
  • So for some reason the Haji gods thought I needed about a bajillion new stallions, which I really really didn't. I got 15 intact 2nd gen colts that all papered B except one who papered A. They all meet my very loose colour requirements for their lines, so now I'm stuck trying to figure out which ones to keep. I haven't comparison tested them yet due to costs, but I assume that should be the next step.

Their sires (the colts all come from 2) were both B papered foundies (I think either Ex Pros or Rank Specials) so I'm not even sure if I should be keeping B papered colts from them, or if I should just wait for more As. Should I just geld all the Bs and only keep As out of B papered foundation sires?

I know that B papers is about right for a second gen and that it can take more longer than 3rd gen to get As out of regular foundation stock, but I need to impose some limits here lol.
  • As a personal rule of thumb unless a colt is an incredibly special combination of genes, if he's got a B-papered sire he needs to be an A to stay intact in my barn. As you can see the Bs are really easy to get and it's a really quick, easy benchmark to apply clean across the board. Like you said, you need to impose some limits!
  • I require my 3rd gen boys to paper A if they come from normal create DHHs. They're not difficult to get. I am starting to get Star papered colts at 5th gen now from normal lines, usually, C - B - A - A - Star.
  • I normally follow the same progression as ForestShadow if they start at C. If they are ExPro, B, then it goes B-A-A-Star.
  • Same. Exp x Exp colts have to be A to stay intact. Regular x regular have to be B. I still end up with too many lol. Comp testing helps as well, but I wouldn't bother with the B boys because most of them are probably only AGA their sire
  • For a quick cut I would snip all the B brothers of the A colt as he is superior to them because he has the next level papers.

I comparison test all colts against the sire then against brothers and keep the best one from each sire (i keep AGA brothers as long as they are superior to sire. Usually they get snipped as the younger brother comes of age if I like him better colour wise) including test the A boy against his sire.
