  • i keep culling losers, ones that lose more than they win, but amd always showing a weekly loss.

i used to make about 10,000 per week until i started culling and i don't understand it.

every couple of days i look and see what horses have lost a race. any that lose, i look at them and decide. if they are consistent losers, they go to public auction.

when i look at my profit/loss column, 90% of my horses show a + beside their winnings.

    yet i still am losing.

  • Have you seen the posts about the recent change to the showing system? Here is one, but there are others: http://www.huntandjump.com/forum.php#/discussion/1420/haj-showing-payout-system-has-been-changed

Don't look at your net profits (which only takes in to account show payouts minus entry fees). Look at the weekly showing bonus on the line above it. This is where the real money is now. Any time a horse comes in better than last it gains points, and the weekly bonus is 60% of the total points of all your horses.

  • I'm going to give you an example of how the new showing system is working for my H&J 2 stable because it's a lot smaller than my H&J 1 account, and the new showing system has been running longer there, so the results are pretty clear.

First, an overview of SandyCreek Farm. I wasn't really doing any showing at all until just before Ammit revised the system, so the vast majority of the points have been acquired quite recently. I have a total of 538 horses. My primary barn has 76 residents, mostly this year's foals. I am not currently showing any of them. There are 73 horses in my pastures that are also not currently showing. So that makes a total of 391 horses in the barns on auto-show. All of these horses are shown twice a week, under the current program. None of them are higher than Level 4. Most of them are fairly young. There's a lot of red when I look down the earnings column of each barn. My profits have been running more than -3,000 hbs, consistently, since I began recording stats on a regular basis on August 14. Here is a copy of my "Points vs. Profits" account for the last week.

The last line for each day recorded is the difference between the weekly showing bonus I would receive at the next weekly roll-over if I completely quit showing on that date and that days net profit deficit. It is not a record of a daily pay-out. Comparing these entries I show the following results:

In one week, my horses gained a combined total of 1197 points.
The estimate of the weekly showing bonus increased by 718 hbs.
The showing profits deficit fluctuated a bit, but was mainly in the same ballpark each day.
The amount by which the estimated showing bonus exceeded the showing deficit jumped by 881 hbs,

Looking only at the net profit column, things look dire indeed. However, looking at the steadily increasing points and points bonus, I am greatly encouraged. After all, before the new system came in, I wasn't making anything showing, and things will only get better.

So, my take on things is that culling, unless the horse is consistently coming in last week after week, is counter-productive, at least for my stable that has only recently entered the showing world of H&J 2.
