Satin and in/line breeding
-
Question One: How frowned upon is multiple horses in one line all going back to one founding sire? Even when 3-4 generations down the line?
Question Two: How does Satin (two copies) look on horses? It seems Satin shows up best on dark colors, such as grullo and black. Is that the case? I did come across this horse (link provided). Is this the effect what homozygous satin looks like on a certain color, or are there other factors going on with this particular horse? Thanks!

Re: Question 1:
That's really subjective! Some people don't like it at all, some people don't care at all. Most people I imagine are in the middle somewhere. Personally by the 4th generation I don't care. I try to avoid it in the 3rd generation, but when dealing with some of the super limited edition genes it can be tricky to avoid.
Re: Question 2:
If you're talking about the vivid blue color that horse has going, that's not satin at all. It's one of the luster dust pieces from one of the tack packs. (Lightning, in fact!) Satin only shows up when it's homozygous and how it looks does indeed depend on the base color of the horse, but on a bay like the one you linked it actually looks like http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=2543972... still shiny but more of a natural-looking effect.

I have an active satin breeding line. Here is a link to all my intact homozygous satin horses so you can see how it looks on a wide variety of base colors:

Personally, inbreeding does not bother me. It is done in real life and can be an attribute to a breeding program when done correctly. My top show & performance dog I bred is inbred (father x daughter) and he stamps himself on his line 3-4 generations out. I love how I can see his influence.

Always keep in mind there is no "right" way to play, simply finding the best strategy for your barn goals. I personally inbreed many of my horses to get more homozygous of certain genes, or if they are the most likely match to get a good foal.

Thanks all. Yeah, I actually have a rattery IRL and you can line/inbreed for 10-20 generations safely with the species. It's well recommended in order to work in and out particular traits and genes. But, I've taken a hiatus from the game and wasn't sure what the general consensus was in game and with virtual horses lol

I personally don't care about inbreeding. I pasture breed, so every season there's always some inbred foals out of parents that are siblings from pastures.
