Morgan Horses
-
I know very little about the Morgan Horse as a breed, but I have just noticed one for sale and as I am looking for a project pony to do pony dressage with I was quite interested.
So I was hoping for some opinions from people who know a little about the Morgan Horse, I do not have any photos, but this video.

Morgans have great personalities, they love to work and can go forever. For dressage horses, it'll be difficult to find one that tracks up well, the mare you posted looks like she has a decent canter but her trot was short and not tracking. She'd be a good low level horse, for a project horse she looks good.
I do know several morgans that have excelled in dressage, just takes time and training. They were bred to be gaited, so it's a little difficult I suppose, but this one is only half morgan, so, who knows? -
I actually think this horse is tracking up just fine for its greenness level. It is clearly still learning to lift its back and is having a hard time holding its frame. In the same was as most green horses. I think this horse will actually do well for pony dressage. At 14.2 hands though make SURE you measure this horse before purchasing if you want to ride pony division. People do sell just over horses as 14.2 to makes sales easier.Need to contact me? I started a Morgan cross pony awhile back! He was a fantastic little man! Very sweet and intelligent, and naturally an expressive mover. He did not do well with the lesson kids though - but the lesson program he was in is a mill, and sensitivity is not taught, so I think it wore away at his patience with time. (I don't blame him one bit for that, as I would've been a much naughtier pony if my head had been tied down with side reins for "advanced" students' lessons) He was, by the way, a rescue too - and he adapted that well to a dressage life!
I definitely second Ammit's recommendation for measuring - measure him reeeaaaallllyyy accurately, and don't forget to take shoes and (if he's young) growth into account. -
Thank you all for opinions !! Might just have to go have a look next weekend and will be sure to measure ;)
This girl is nine, so a little older, but owner said she is very green irrespective of age. I'll let you know how it goes!
And Ragazz nothing makes me more cross than horses having their heads tied down, I just don't understand how anyone could think it's a good training method. The horrible things horses have to go through. :(Post edited by Balmoral Aus at 2014-10-18 06:35:52
