Too many 2nd generations
  • Hmm, I am in a dilemma.

I have a lot of 2yo 2nd generation fillies that passed SMA. However, my 2nd generation pasture is full. The older mares in the pasture had their testing reset, so the ones there have passed the new SMA.

    What would you people do?
  • lol I'd buy a new barn :)) Or pasture now that I have a job

  • I'd find other parameters to thin the herd with. Papering, AFPT, genes, etc.
Go boldly, where no App has gone before!
  • I agree with Kat. Decide what you really want from your 2nd gen breeding stock in terms of quality and/or pretty colours. Mind you, I am very bad at thinning my herd - so you may want to take HayesStable's suggestion and just enlarge your stable. ;)

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure.

  • I'm bad at culling too, so I wait until I'm in an analytical mood before I do anything xD
When I cull or thin, u start with my older mares and look at their average foal PT (is it at least .4 higher than her?) And if she has intact babies, how do those babies look? Is their afpt improving? If not I can sometimes cull a lot of horse from just one mare and then I have the issue of what show horses to keep xD
Sometime I save higher PT show foals and sell them as 2/3yos in training :)
  • I'm still going through the lot, but this seems to be a very high quality mare

  • I would keep the horses with the most potential or the highest PT level and sell the rest I would be interested if you need homes for some
  • PT level doesn't necessarily correlate to breeding ability. I've had blue papered mares that had low PT scores for 2nd and 3rd gen.
I am mostly keeping mares that foaled blue papered fillies or A papered sons. I also am keeping mares that had at least a 10.5 AFPT.
