Hello,
Does anyone know whether HuntandJump is attempting to keep the genetics accurate with modern discoveries or are they just staying with what was established when they designed the system? I understand it could mean major overhauls in some cases.

On a second note why do some horses "test" as colors different than their pictures? For example I have a "black tobiano" that is really a black with socks. She does not have any tobiano markings and as that gene is dominant to have the genotype, she must also have the phenotype.

Forgive me if I sound a bit pretentious. I do not mean to but I am studying under a color geneticist at the moment and loving every minute!

Yes to the 1st question, but we also have "fantasy" genes which do not exist in real life. However, it's rather clear which genes are fantasy genes and which genes are realistic.

Tobiano can be rather sneaky with those "socks". The white factor is what determines how well a horse's phenotype matches its genotype. I would bet that your black tobiano has very little white factor.

Hi @Montesque. Minimal tobianos are very much a real thing. While most tobianos have at least some socks there have been cases of DNA test confirmed tobi's with no white markings at all.

The game was founded 11 years ago. While there are some things that are a bit out of date (for example some of our dominate white mutation numbers don't match the real ones, because they had not been discovered yet), we are always moving to keep things are realistic as possible. I have been changing those numbers over to match the real ones here and there as I get the time.

We have things like E and KIT gene linkage and were the first game I know of to correctly place all the assorted KIT mutations onto one gene. We recently had a change to match the new understanding of dominate white lethality.

Before that appaloosa was updated to match the most current up to date understanding of how those genes work.

BC Western Dawn Hey, I’m not good at genetics and it says my new foal is a frame, is that a bad thing? Is it fatal to breeding?

Frame is not necessarily bad. It can produce some lovely markings with other patterns (whites and homozygous splash in particular) although by itself it can be invisible, and it doesn't have much effect on tobiano. It is homozygous lethal, though, so you should avaiod breeding 2 frame horses together unless you are willing to risk a 25% chance of a dead foal. In real life it causes Overo Lethal White syndrome where the foal is born solid white with an incomplete digestive tract and dies of imapaction colic a few days after birth unless it is euthanized.

It dosn't have a ton of visible interaction with tobi but it does increase the amount of white.
