Lethal genetic combos
  • Hi lovely people.
Could somebody please remind me which genetic combos could result in a dead foal (here on HAJ). I know that Olw Olw is one but what are the others?
    Thanks in advance
  • Breeding any two horses with any variety of white together can result in a dead foal. Sabino 1 or 2 with White 1 or 2 as well. They are safe with White 3 or 4. You can can breed any sabinos together safely. Sabino 3 is supposed to be safe to cross with any whites.

  • Yup, Sabino 3 is never lethal. I've crossed it with everything. :)

  • So if I have a horse that is Kitw Kit, would I be able to GMT him to add one frame gene or would that be a killer combo?
This is the horse in question http://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=2874361
What else can I add to him to bling him up without killing him? lol
  • No, a frame gene should work well. Frame plays nicely with all of the whites, sabinos and splash.

Hmm, he's so white now, the only thing to make him flashier would be to GMT his white factor down to medium or light. Then you could add splash maybe, or appaloosa, if you wanted a fancier pattern.

  • You can gmt anything without killing him, but if you add the frame just don't breed him to mares that have either frame or white. Or sabino 1&2

  • Frame is only lethal with Frame, Frame is safe with everything else.

However, GMT'ing a horse to have a lethal combination will never cause it to die. You can GMT a horse to be homozygous Frame, White, Sb1 or Sb2 and W1 or W2. It's only when you breed horses together that can produce a lethal combination that you run the risk.

    Here are some examples:

This horse is W2 and Sb1, which would typically be lethal. However, they were GMT'd on by the owner.

This horse is W and Sb1, which would also be lethal if horses with these genes were bred together. However, they were also GMT'd on by the owner.

This stallion of mine is homozygous for Frame, which would be lethal as well. However, the other frame was GMT'd onto him.

  • Thank you everyone! I know that he is pretty white already, but I want to GMT him before breeding him to some of my plainer mares in hope that he passes on at least some bling! Just didn't want to kill him in the process!

PS Raina, I got some CRACKER foals from two of the straws you sent me :D
  • double post *sorry*
