So I have a new growing obsession, I don't usually breed for appies, but neither do I cull them so I have a few floating around in my herds. But I am becoming increasingly drawn to the ones with BIG spots! So I'm asking those that do breed appies for their observations on inheritance.

There does seem to be a genetic component, I just haven't quite got the hang of what it is. I'm guessing it's a bit like PATN, in that the modifiers for big spots are inherited separately to the Lp gene. Of course not knowing how many modifiers for spot size there are makes it more complicated!

I'd love anyone's input on what they think, or if anyone has any smaller or heavier gen2/gen3's with big spots I'd be interested in them!

It may be a total coincidence but I've found that sometimes when crossing two Good China horses together I will get some huge spots. Maybe look into that rank special? Some examples:

I've bought a few from you by Dreamcatcher with big spots too. He seems to throw quite a few, not all the time though so not sure if he's the one with big spots or your mares!

This one was from a Good China mare. My others haven't thrown big spots but they were put to appies with small spots

It may just be my stallion, but looking at you other good china foal it looks like they all can produce big spots with the right pairing. I also see that some of my pumpkin spice mares also produce large spots, but again with Dreamcatcher, so it may just be him.

I've put these large spot horses up for sale. No pressure to buy any of them, but maybe you'll like something.

I've observed that spot size does tend to run in bloodlines since I do breed for Appies.

My Vault of Stars sire line tends to have big spots.
My Dark Chocolate appy boy tends to throw big spots too.
My Ice 9 Freaky Friday stallion tends to throw big spots, but he also has had foals with smaller spots, but it seems to depend on the dams as well.

So I would say that there is a tendency for big spots in certain sire lines, but I think there's still a randomness to which sire lines have the big spot tendencies. I don't think that certain DHHs are guaranteed to have big spots. I think it's just the luck of the draw when you create.
