Horses and ponies
-
Hi everyone!
What is the difference in height between horses and ponies (not talking about miniponies)? I was told horses are taller than 14.2hh at withers, is this correct? -
It also would depend on breed.
-
Arabians are always horses, regardless of height, for example. I believe Icelandic horses are the same. The main distinction between ponies and horses is height. A horse is usually considered to be an equine that's at least 14.2 hands (or about four feet ten inches) tall. A pony, on the other hand (pun totally intended!), is an equine less than 14.2 hands.

In Australia ponies are 14hh and under, so depends on country and breed

You guys are awesome. Thanks so much for helping! This is for english version of a paper. By here when we talk about ponies, we are always referring to breeds like Shetland, Falabella etc. (although for the smaller ones we use the term minipony). Anything higher than 100 something centimeters is called horse.

148 cm :) But that is the same as the american 14.2hh :)ID 195859

Is this based on some breed association? Is there a source?

It is the standard set by FEI
From the show jumping rules:
ARTICLE 4 DEFINITION OF A PONY
1. A Pony is a small Horse whose height at the withers, having been measured on a smooth level surface, does not exceed 1.48 m without shoes.
1.1. A height allowance is made for Ponies being measured at FEI Events; for Ponies being measured at an FEI Event the Pony’s height must not exceed a maximum of 1.50 m without shoes or a maximum of 1.51 m with shoes (refer to VRs Art. 1042). Refer to Art. 13 of this Annex for details on Pony measurement.
