Gene help for an author?
  • Hi guys!
Im a writer working on my new sci-fi book, but Im worldbuilding just now, and I'd love to come up with some genes for the main alien species here. Think shapeshifting magical people who turn into really big bipedal wingless dragons. I already have a sort of dun gene but I'd love some help coming up with some more possibly? What patterns could you see on them? Or effects with colour?

They can change their scale colour at will, so I've taken some inspiration from real life like Zero bearded dragons who are white as they have no pigment or harlequin crested geckos which have vibrant tricolours

  • I don't know if your alien species comes in male/female but if you assign them with human type X and Y genes you could play around with X-linked chromosomes. I remember reading years ago that tortoiseshell coloured cats were female because it was something to do with needing to be XX to show up.

I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure.

  • Ooohh thats excellent thank you! They do have male/female, and females are often much more decorated than males, but males could potentially have genes added that work that way! Cheers :D
