Sons of pumpkin spice
  • Can't decide if i want to keep them. They are pretty, but some seem rather ordinary.

This is my favorite so far, based solely on appearance. But how many stallions do I need?

  • I also have a pumpkin spice mare, who is in the pasture with my hidden gates stallion. That should be interesting. Since I'm new to the game, i haven't a clue what I'm doing. The question I suppose is, do you keep the colts that don't get gelded, how many, and if you sell them, are they worth more than usual with an RS parent?
    Thanks
  • It depends on how strict you want to be. :D

I've been playing this game since 2011, and have been seriously hoarding horses most of that time, until, right now, I've got 5,235 of them. I have been able to purchase lots of barns and a fair number of pastures, so I'm not cramped for space. I tend to keep all my foals, and some game years I don't get all the colt and filly foals checked out, so quite a few that ought to have been neutered aren't. Of course, I'm not making any special effort to breed all my intact horses either.

That said, as a new player just starting out, you probably don't have that luxury. I would suggest keeping only the best of the colts that don't get gelded by BA and that also have the look and quality that you're wanting for your current goals. I recommend papering them (at least the ones you're most interested in). This may identify any that passed BA that still papered no better than their sire, which can happen; these I neuter, you might want to send them to auction. If there more that pass BA and paper superior to sire, I would auction any more ordinary ones that have lower PT scores. I would also recommend gelding and keeping at least a couple that have higher PT scores than their brothers. This will help grow your show string.

If you can afford to comparison test at least a few of the babies with each other, that might help weed out a few more. I've had several B papered sons of a C papered sire test about as good as each other, only to find that the next B papered son on the list is superior to the B papered brother I've been comparing the others to. Then I go back and neuter the ones that were about as good as each other and start comparing to the superior B boy. It doesn't happen often, but it does work out that way sometimes.

Foals with a Rank Special parent or parents might be worth a bit more than foals of ordinary parents, since they will likely have higher paper levels, but probably not a lot, unless they have inherited something really special like Brindle, or still in demand like DP. Sometimes a forum auction will help determine what other players are willing to pay.

  • Awesome advice, thanks. I shall keep most of them, but I have too many colts and will need to snip the ones I won't breed later to make them better showponies, right? :)

  • That's what I would suggest, yes. It will give them an advantage in training.
