Breeding Advice
  • Hello,
I am focusing on breeding champagne tobianos for this group and I can't decide on which stud to use. My mares are all foundation creates. The first stud is a foundation as well, but has no white factor (I like white). The second is a colt of his that is superior to his sire. This colt has light white factor.

So my question is, is there any merit to breeding foundation to foundation, vs breeding the foundation mares to a superior stud (his mother is not within the group)?

    Thanks!
  • There is merit to breeding evenly (foundation x foundation, 2G x 2G, etc).

Many players, myself included, prefer this method because it allows you to track progress through generations. It also adds some value to the horses that you breed, because so many choose this route and want similar stock.

In addition to the ease of tracking progress, breeding even generations also gives a somewhat better chance at intact foals. I used to breed whatever I wanted to, as long as the paper levels were somewhat similar, but find that mixed lineage can put horses on different levels even within their respective 'ranks'- for example, three studs may all be A-papered, but each one can produce different quality based on their heritage. Even generations remove some of the guesswork, resulting in a few more intact foals (from my own experience, at least).

Of course, it all depends on personal preference. I personally wished I had started breeding evenly much sooner, because I had invested a lot of money in horses I no longer want to breed. I hope this helps some; this is exactly the advice I wish I'd asked for a few years ago :)

I'll happily answer any more questions you have!

  • I agree with urkidnme’s points. I always breed first by generation then by paper level within the generation.

I also keep my breeding stock sorted into barns by generations so I can track the progression of papers through the generations and I only keep the top 1-2 paper levels in each barn. It’s not unusual for me to find studs in 3 barns that are related (grandsire, sire, son), superior to their sire and yet all the same paper level so there is a range within the papers.

I would use the foundation on the foundation mares because he would already be in the pedigree anyways but the pedigree wouldn’t be lopsided as it would if you used the son. And you can always breed the WF up. Just make it a requirement to stay intact the foal must have WF___ or higher.

  • On the other hand, you might want to look for 2nd gen champagne tobiano stallions up for public stud for your 2nd gen mares, or on the sale list.

Most of my Champagne Tobiano stallions are drafts, though there is one Riding Horse.

I would be willing to sell one if you're interested. I can increase the WF on the 2 and 3 year olds, if one of them interests you.
