Frame
-
Can someone explain what exactly the frame gene does? I didn't see much info on the gene page.
-
Frame is a gene that creates the classic "Overo" pattern in paint/pinto horses. It pushes the pigment on horses carrying splash and White Spotting Kit mutations to the top and bottom of the horses's body (mostly) leaving white patches with jagged edges. It has less effect on Tobiano than it does on the other Kit mutations and does not appear to affect roan, I think.
Frame is homozygous lethal. In real life, the gene is involved in the development of a foal's digestive system. When both copies are broken (OlwOlw), the foal is born with an incomplete digestive tract and it dies of impaction colic soon after birth. Horses without splash or white spotting mutations can carry Frame with no visible sign, so testing is essential in any horse with Olw in its ancestry.
Some examples of horses with heterozygous Frame.
A Frame carrier with no white markings to be affected.
Western Olive
A Frame carrier with tobiano and sabino 1. The sabino markings are restricted, while the tobiano markings seem untouched.
