Breeding project advice
-
I think I want to try breeding for roan splash tobiano appaloosa. (I love white patterns) I am having a hard time figuring out which of my mares to breed and which to either spay or sell as they won't help my project. What would you all think os the best route to go? Here is the link to my breeding stock.

Without time to look at your horses (I am sorry, on the bus on my way to work at the moment), my general advice would be to select those mares that carries atleast one of the genes you ara breeding for, and the more of them, the better :) Neither of the genes you are breeding for is lethal with each other (unless you are mixing in splash 2 and 3), so you can end up with having horses that are homozygot for splash and appaloosa, and also have roan and tobiano without problems :) if you want more foundation mares that carries the genes, I can check what I have for you.

There are some perfect mares with atleast 100% breeding ability from Foundation Rescue, that may suit your project:

These guys don't have any roan, splash, tobiano or appaloosa so unless they have other genes you like they would be not help you reach your goal.

Ok, so I had the time to look at your horses. If you want to cull, I would keep those who:
1) carries the genes you want, or atleast some of the genes, and
2) Those that you just love, regardless of their genes :)
You have a beautiful herd!
Make sure everyone has had breeding advice, and habe atleast papered yellow, to make a good foundation for a quality, colored herd.
The good thing with buying from foundation rescue, is that the horses is gauranteed to have atleast 100% breeding and showing ability, and have perfect consistancy. You can also use the herd helpers that are shared on the forum, especially those who are exceptional splash, rabiccano, tobiano or appaloosa, as they will be blue papered mares or B-papered stallions.
Good luck, and have fun with creating your herd! -
Or use DHHs to create your herd, there are specific DHHs that are roan splash appaloosa, etc
