Untestable genes + fantasy gene - how do you know they have it?
  • I am just curious how do you know if a foal has a minimal expression of an untestable gene, which is not visible, if they have a fantasy gene? I have ice strewn into my GP line. I was only able to tell if a foal was Hz GP when they were entered in the breeder's club and I only keep Hz Colts. I am now perplexed on to how to move this forward. Advice is appreciated.

  • I have bred nexus and KP for quite a while but my nexus started at a higher generation and my kp at foundation so I am just starting to have kp mares in generations without kp studs yet so I just added a bunch of hetero mares to my nexus pastures for next season.

So far I’ve been marking the gene in their names. Since nexus is searchable I just put NX in all of them. Homo KP get uppercase and after each seaoson I go through the homo KP studs and add kp to all their foals (just realizing I’ve forgotten to go through all my homo mares to do the same)

I always forget to check the breeding boards to check for homo kp horses. I also don’t mark the second generation out from homo KP. I thought about it but figured could be tagging a whole lot of horses that probably won’t have inherited the gene or had a chance to so somewhere down the line I may have some surprise KP. Pretty much if I can’t tell if it’s homo from 2 het parents it doesn’t get marked as kp unless it has a KP foal I have gone back a few times and updated the name prefix

  • No way to tell, like in the old days. Unless you have GMTs to spend. Then you can try adding it to them in the GMT lab. Thats usually what I do if I am uncertain, and it's a colt I would keep. I also mark all mine with GP (hom), Gp (het) and gp (uncertain), in their names, so that I can tell from the parents name if it is likely they are homozygous or not.
