A good problem to have maybe?
  • I have all of my yellow papered mares in a pasture with a C papered stallion. This season the crop of foals that came out of that pasture was mostly colts. All of them passed BA and papered higher than thier sire. Now I don't know which ones to keep for breeding and which ones to geld or sell.
  • Tell me about it, lol. I had 17 pasture bred colts from one stallion that passed SBA this season. I trimmed them down to 4 based on genetic testing, then compared them to their sire. Only one tested superior, so that was easy.
  • When you can afford it, I'd compare them to an exceptional foundation stallion. The ones as good as him will be superior to their C papered sire, but you might have one or two that are even superior to the exceptional, so they will be the best ones! Then of course I'd geld all the ones worse than the exceptional

  • Also if you pick a goal to breed for and be very specific it can help narrow down the choices.

I breed consistent Grullos with white patterns.

First to be culled are any inconsistent or anything not Grullo.

For my KP line horses with 2 kit patterns are kept over ones with plain Kit.

For my nexus/ axiom line all intact foals must have nexus or axiom to stay intact.

I only keep Superior to sire and when I have time I go through and comparison test brothers against brothers only keeping AGA until a superior comes along. A lower paper level between brothers is an automatic snip.

I only keep 3 per stallion intact so I open each stud page and pull up their colts. If they’ve passed all the above testing or requirements they are usually pretty equal so this last cull is the least structured of my checklist and dependant on the day.

Some days it’s a quick sort by PT and snip #4+ . Others I look at the colt pics and pic the 3 that catch my eye the most because some generations they need to be eye catching to be picked. I compare genetics:

EE DD studs get preference over het E and/or D since their foals will be Grullo.

W8, sb2, w3 all have a spotty look that I’m currently in love with so they get picked to stay intact more than the tobiano that is all over my herd and easier to add at the foundation level (I use the true breeding grullo splash tobiano hhs a lot for my foundations)

I’m pretty sure I’ve used eenie meanie miny moe once or twice
