How do you test for DP
-
I have so many in my barn with StySty, but what would make them DP?

Like this lovely for example....I have so many like her

DP is not a testable gene. It's one of three of those in the game, I believe. The others are Gulastra Plume and Kit Promoter. None of them show up on the gene test.
There are two ways to be certain a horse carries DP. A homozygous sooty chestnut with the color name Liver Chestnut, you will know that it also carries at least one copy of DP. This filly's pedigree shows Liver Chestnuts in both her sire's and her dam's line. She's dark enough that she might be homozygous DP, since she's very, very dark except for the areas affected by her Pangare gene. If you decide to keep her intact, and breed her to a homozygous sooty chestnut stallion and get liver chestnuts every time, you will know that she's DPDP.
The other time you can tell for sure is if you have a homozygous sooty palomino with the color name Chocolate Palomino. There is no special name for DP carriers in other colors like bay or champagne or buckskin. You have to learn to recognize them from experience, which I haven't.
To get a liver chestnut or a chocolate palomino the horse has to carry three copies of the two darkening genes, either SstySsty DPdp or SstyS DPDP.Thanked by 1DoubleMash -
Thanks Sandy Creek
I am pretty sure I have a large number in my barn, and there is great consistency from a few lines, but with no club, like GP (have a couple now :x ) or Kit (none) it's difficult to know if I should pursue it or not.
