Recognizing DP?
-
I'm pretty new and still working out how to recognize hidden genes, so I was hoping someone more experienced could help me! :)
I just rolled this bay appaloosa girl. She's hom for Sooty, but she's darker than I've seen, and I've been creating a lot of bay/brown horses (with no, het, and hom sooty) recently. Does she carry DP? Or is this just an especially dark expression of bay?
Thanks in advance!

I'm not an expert with DP carrying bays. However, she is also Wild Bay, A+, which usually becomes a bright cherry red when DP is present.
Here's one of my Cherry Drop stallions, that definitely carry DP.

I hope someone who breeds for DP bays can stop in and give you an opinion.Post edited by SandyCreekAcres at 2018-11-12 08:12:22 -
Thanks for the perspective! I might just not be very familiar with wild bay heh. The cherry drop example helps a ton, thanks!
-
Yeah, she is a pretty StySty wild bay. I love that chocolatey shade :)ID 195859

What surprised me about her is that she doesn't show the Pangare that she carries. Evidently Wild Bay overrides that particular gene, because a search for horses that have both shows that heterozygous Pp doesn't show up on them. Amazing! You can learn something new on a regular basis playing this game.Thanked by 1ChateauAlbere

I think the lack of any lightening was what threw me off! Thanks for helping everyone :)
-
@SandyCreekAcres I think I read somewhere the pangere is resesive? Meaning the unless a horse is pp it won't show. I could be wrong.
-
No, that is Flaxen, satin, and mushrooom.
Pangare is a complete dominant, meaning that it will affect the horse's appearance when heterozygous P. -
She does carry DP, I was unsure at first because of the red hue of the Cherry Drop RS but then I remembered I have this Wild Bay mare that carries DP.Post edited by MW Stables at 2018-11-16 08:03:49

Thanks @MW Stables! This is really cool. I'll try breeding her with a hom DP stud when she grows up to confirm, but right now I'm feeling lucky! :x
-
@SandyCreekAcres oh my mistake. I wish the gene pages actually showed what the gene looked like written out.
@MWStables "Liver" is only applied to a chestnut horse. A palamino that carries DP will add "chocolate" to its name. But those are the only two colors that get name changes. And from my understanding a Cherry Drop is only bright red because of the wild bay. DP affects regular bay differently. -
@MWStables you canged your comment before mine posted lol.
I wonder why the Cherry Drop is so bright and other wild bays look more chocolatey? -
@Wingedeagle Maybe it's the hom Ssty that darkens the red?Post edited by Dapplelight at 2018-11-16 08:20:18

No, the chocolatey ones does not have DP, that is just the StySty. The red ones have DP.
This one is homozygous DP, homozygous sooty:

A little skewed by axiom, but you can see the bright red color. The one that has been posted further up is a non DP, homozygous sooty.ID 195859

Sorry @Wingedeagle lol I reread mine after I posted and then had to correct it! I guess I was wrong then, I have been breeding the mare I have to a DP stallion so I could have just gotten it wrong. That's why I had originally posted that DP Bays are more red than just darker in my original comment. I never breed DP Bays if I can avoid it because I'm not a fan of bright red Bays in the game. @Ammit does Wild Bay affect DP or just the extent that Sooty will darken the coat?
-
Ammit does not want us to tag her unless it is an emergency, MW Stables :)ID 195859

Yeah, the only DP I like in bay based coats is if they are brown. I much prefer the chocolatey tones of the non DP bays even though I breed for DP. I just don't like the bright red. Sadly.

Just wanted to update everyone since there was some debate - I checked since DP is in the genre sale today, and this girl does NOT carry DP. Thanks for the help everyone!Thanked by 1Kintara

Wait.... cherry drops are DP?!
-
She's lovely, nontheless!

RS Abes Cherry Tree cherry drop I added homo sooty tooThanked by 1Kintara -
So is a liver chestnut DP? I'm a little confused.
-
Yes livers would be DP as well.Thanked by 1Lioness83
