Best time to thin out show string
-
At what age, or what criteria, is best for thinning out my show string? Is PT reliable enough to sort out the show horses that should be kept, or should I wait until they hit a certain age to see how many points they've gathered?
-
Check the older ones and the ones that have leveled off, usually what i look for. Most younger babies need time to train & show before they become earners
-
I never cull my show string. Even if a horse has leveled off near the bottom of a class, I might stop showing it, but as long as it has a decent number of points, those points will continue to add to your showing bonus until it ages out of the game.
This 28 year old gelding has been leveled off probably since he turned 11, but he is showing in the middle of level 7N and still is adding in the neighborhood of 15 points every time he shows. He currently has over 2000 points and adds around 250 hbs to my showing bonus every night. Cull him? Heck, NO!

This 24 year old gelding probably leveled off when he turned 10. He is showing in the middle of 7L and so isn't adding many points when he shows. However, he has a total of 1796 points and brings in 192 hb's a night.

I have started to cull some of my show ponies, I look to see if they’ve leveled off yet and at what level they’re at. Like if I see one that’s leveled off at only a 2 or 3 level and they don’t have hardly any points I’ll put them in the auction. PT score isn’t always a good bet, like with Nusabat the horse posted above my comment. He only has a 9.90 PT but he’s bringing in 192hb’s a day with all his points. I’d say give your non leveled off ponies time to gather points. If you have horses that have leveled off at low levels and they’re giving you a very low payout a day I’d say you’re okay to put them in the auction.

I broke down and culled some of my show horses this year for the first time in....
... I actually can't remember when the last time I did it was. Probably not since Ammit changed up showing so that points determine winnings. I really desperately needed the room, so I loaded up all of my horses that were 15+ and sorted them by total points held and then yummed anything giving me less than 50 HBs per day.
And then I still broke down and bought a new 1000 stall barn anyway, with all the HBs they've earned me over the years. :)) -
I cull my show string by letting them age out of the game, lol.Thanked by 1Kintara
