Freezing temperatures
-
So I know a lot of places the wind chill for the nex 2-3 days will be in the negative temperatures, and when it's that cold both humans and animals can get frostbite within minutes, so I'm just posting a few little tips to help the wild animals in your community :)
First tip would be to try making a little shelter or if you have closed in cages put a nice warm blanket in them and put them out so the animals can get out of the wind.
( what I did was get some old cardboard boxes, put some old towels and blankets in and cut a little hole so the animals can get in and out, I also put a little bit of kitty food in the corner and placed the boxes in areas that are sheltered from the wind )
Second tip- if you have any dog/cat/bird or any type of animal food that you can spare a bit of, put it out for the local strays! With food in their stomachs it will help them through this cold spell.
Third tip, if you have a empty barn or shed or anything they can get out of the wind with and can possibly get the animals in them, offer them the shelter for a few days until these temperatures rise again :)
Doing some of these things will help the animals during these cold temps and make the animal very happy :)
Stay warm everyone and good luck with the cold.Dont let me over spend-

So i'm in Michigan during this lovely polar vortex. Our horses have two shelters and both mares refuse to go into them :)) I even tried feeding them in there but they stand as far away as they can and nibble at it. They're special 8-| :))
My goats have a "cave" made out of a wooden board, a pallet, and a LOT of tarps. Except Olaf. He gets to live in the rabbit shed with the bunnies because hes a buck and he keeps trying to breed to his momma and sister and my two wethers are brutally mean to him. Poor thing is only a 1/4 their size lol
And then as said, the rabbits have a shed. But their water freezes almost immediately so gotta keep changing bottles. I literally stuffed their cages full of hay. Like, half a flake each. I couldn't find one of my does because she was buried, just sitting and munching :))Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

You have to love winter lol. Where I live it’s not un normal for it to be -30 without windchill, right now it’s -12 and -30 if you include windchill. Earlier today it was -2 and it felt like a heat wave.
@HayesStable I had a rabbit heated water bottle for my rabbit, it wasn’t crazy expensive and it worked rather well for her. When I would change her water I’d give her warm water, I figured us humans love our hot cocoa so bunnies would probably enjoy warm water in the cold, she loved it. -
@Silverstar heated bottles run $20 here and i have 4 rabbits so it definitely not worth it to me lol I much would rather just switch out the frozen ones for unfrozen ones. And i also give them warm water. Like, luke warm, not super warm/hot. Or just room temperature if the frozen bottles thaw out with enough water left in there to give to the rabbits without having to refill. WE are now currently experiencing an "ice storm" here in Michigan 8-| I just want it to be summer so i can complain about how hot it is again :))Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

@HayesStable I know what you mean about wanting summer back. Yah that wouldn't be worth it. I've never heard of a ice storm, pardon my curiosity but what does that mean for you?
-
Freezing rain basically. It was below freezing and raining so as soon as the rain hits the ground it basically freezes. It coats EVERYTHING in ice and makes roads horrendous to drive on. Schools and after school activities were closed today. And yet, both our horses, who have 2 shelters, were standing outside getting rained on 8-|Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

That sounds like quite the storm. Horses just don’t think like us,. I know a guy who built a barn/shed for his horses 12+ and they Never go in there unless they’re trying to not get caught. My mare has a shed too but I rarely see her in there.

It's been delightfully cold here today. -10 as opposed to the -53 of not that long ago, but it's been yucky snowing since yesterday. As in steady wind and little beads of fluff that refuses to stay in one place. Im so tired of helping with the shoveling.
