Naming horses
-
How does everyone name your horses?
I've always just put their ID number for their name and now I want to try naming all of mine to keep better track of who's who and names just aren't coming to mind... i cant even think of a prefix... -
A prefix is only necessary if you want it. Name them however makes you happy. At the end of the day it's about having fun, and remember, if you don't like the name, you can always change it again later (or maybe it'll grow on you - I know some of mine have!)
-
Added prefixes make it easier to name because there's so many horses on the game, a lot of names are taken.
-
For intact foundation horses, I often use a horse name generator to spark ideas, but I often change them around a bit, or combine two suggestions.
For intact lined horses, I combine or alter slightly part of the sire's name and and part of the dam's name.
Lined neuters I take a letter from the sire's name to start a string of pronounceable syllables for geldings and a letter from the dam's name to do the dame for spayed mares.
Foundation neuters I start with a random letter of the alphabet, create a combination of syllables as I do for lined neuters. If I'm naming a group of neuters, I just continue on through the alphabet creating nonsense names.
When I'm hand breeding, I combine parts of the sire's and the dam's names to create the foal. It usually keeps that name even if it gets neutered in testing.
I use tattoos to distinguish lined generations on this server, but on the Forest Server I put the generation number after the foal's name if it remains intact through testing. -
As a sample, here's a search of one of my barns that contains a bunch of mares and even more geldings. The gelding's names will give you an idea of what I mean by "random pronounceable syllables. " :D

My show horses are SH #Id, my line horses are Stygian Worchrystals so they all go SW Name. For me a thesaurus works wonders. I type in a word I like or seems to one to mind often, then pick one of the words it gives as synonyms. Normally my names are all two words, some are more, but I do the same as SandyCreek...my lined foals names are a mix of sire and dam.

I name my mares "HS #G ID-NUMBER abc"
HS is my prefix
#G refers to generation where # is a number 1-6 (i don't keep track after 6, sometimes even after 5)
Then their ID number
'abc' refers to my "gene suffixes". I assign a letter of the alphabet to each gene i breed specifically and use them to note what mares and studs have what genes. Lowercase means het, and capital means hom.
Ex:
HS 2G 6744369 fni14
HS 2G 7712601 cs3
My studs get actual names. Foundations get there name from my surroundings basically. For instance, i have a new stud named Polar Vortex since we just went through one. I have one named Dragon of Starlight after a favorite book series of mine, etc. Lined studs get a name based off the sires name. They get the same Prefix and generation notation as the mares as well as the suffixes.
EX:
HS 3G Juneau i1i14Nd
And lastly, my show ponies just get HS ID-NUMBER. I gave up giving my mares proper names long ago. Too many horses to come up with names for.Bluegrass Server: HayesStable - 221755

I try to combine the parents names, unless it's just nonsense words. I have a list of over 5000 name ideas that I have collected over the years. Sometimes a song lyric strikes my fancy, or a book title, the name of a painting, etc. I used to get freebie dog show catalogs, with their pages and pages of lists of categories and rankings. Now that I (finally) have a smart phone, I keep them on a note card app.
I use use some suffixes so I can sort, but I LOVE the naming part, and want to give all my horses 'real' names as much as possible!

I love your garbage names Sandy Creek! They sound all sci fi or mythical or something, so awesome :))HJ1: 133971Thanked by 1SandyCreekAcres

Horses that I bred and will breed get an "SwS" after their names, breeding stock that I bought get an "S." Show horses get the last 3 digits of their id number after their names. So far I name all my keepers, but then I'm new and don't have that many horses!
-
All my intact horses get a prefix added to their ID#. That tells me their gender and generation in 3 letters.
JL - JOLO Ladies
JL - JOLO Studs (my barn name has always been JOLO. This summer I finally picked real breed names but didn’t feel like changing my system or converting everyone to the new letters)
Starting with the second generation I add a letter of the alphabet to indicate generation.
a=2nd, b=3rd, c=4th etc.
At a glance I know that JLd is a 5th Gen mare.
A few years ago I needed some direction for my herds so on each server I picked 2 “special genes” to breed for and added 2 letter indications to come after the prefix or after the ID#.
After the prefix HJ1 has NX - nexus (since then I’ve added AX - Axiom, and PL - Plaid) and at the end of the name I put the KP for Homo KP and kp for het KP (I only track the first Gen of het. Kp until a homo KP foal pops up again.)
On HJ1 I have IC just after the prefix for all my Ice horses with the version of ice after that. At the end of the names I have Sa for satin.
I try to name my special gened foundation horses and any that have had interest from outside barns. Every once in a while I sit down to watch a TV show and start working through the unnamed horses using random words that stick out from the conversations and situations on the television or I use books or episode titles from IMDB.
I don’t have internet at home and limited data so I struggle to keep up with naming and tattooing horses. Lately I’ve been working on tattooing horses more than naming to try to get through the most amount of horses in the least amount of time.Breeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genes -
My foundations are all named off of favorite characters from books or movies. For lined horses I type in the names of the parents to an online thesaurus and look through the synonyms and translations.
-
I use a thesaurus for the foundation names. :)) To many to come up with on my own.
-
I just started naming some of my favorite pixels..
Starting with this girl!
Voodoo Dolls
Needless to say I've been singing Ricky Martin living la Vida loca in my head for a few days (for what reason I don't know) and I thought voodoo dolls was a good fit for a black liver chestnut lol -
She's gorgeous Brandi207! I love that coloring! Paradox has one similar to her. I've been thinking about trying for these as appys instead of my Gold cream champagne line. They're pretty but the livers are so much prettier :))
-
My foundations always get random names, sometimes songs, towns, drinks, etc. Rank Specials are usually named after something that has to do with that Rank Special, especially my mares (Bone Fire - Born In Fire, Good China - Out For The Guests, King's Ransom - Demanded By Kings, etc.) The offspring are named by combing the parents' names.
-
II use the prefix ZO for my high PT-line. ZO is the initials for my barn name, Zolotaya Orda.
For my fun, gmt-line that I have started from my own foundations, I use x as a prefix, and then name them according to their generations. I name them alphabetically according to their generations. Foundations has the letter A, so a foundation may be called x Aldebaran. 2.gen has the letter B, so a 2.gen could be called x Betelgeuse. 3rd gen has the letter C and so on. In that way, it is easy to know what generation they are, without so many specific numbers and letters to tell them apart.
I try to use portuguese names for the line, as I am learning portuguese at the moment. That also makes naming easier, all I need is a dictionary, and look up the letter "a" or "b" and so on.Post edited by Herzeloyde at 2019-02-11 12:34:14 -
Naming generations would be so much easier that way! Thank you for the idea!
-
That's quite cool actually Herzeloyde, although the thought of trying to think of all those names for my thousands of horses pulls me up LOL! I just use my prefix KT, with a number for generations. So simply KT2, KT3 etc followed my their ID number, sometimes I add era too. Just makes it quick and easy for me when I pull up intact foals. They may or may not get proper names down the track. Stallions always get names though
