Evaluating Show Points
-
Thread started by hiddenvfarmhiddenvfarm June 2016
What's a good number of points for each age a horse that will show good will have? For example. I have some 4 year Olds with 40 to 60 pts. Some alittle less. And I know u can't cull the younger ones based on points. But I am finally getting some foals into the 5s and 6s.

I'm not sure that total points is a good basis for culling until a horse has finished its training, and maybe not even then. Look at it this way.
1. Most created foundation horses probably start out as 3 or 4 year olds, so they start out at that age in Level 1. Foals start out training at 2, so they will have an advantage of 1 or 2 years' training on created foundations. It's not fair to compare 4 year old foundations with 4 year old lined horses.
2. Many foundation horses will have a PT score between 9.0 and 9.9. They will add about 3 points per training to their show scores. Those below 9.5 may have weeks when they gain a little less. Intact horses will level off at age 9 and only gain tiny fractions of a point thereafter. Neutered foundations will level off at age 10 and will likewise gain only tiny fractions of a point after that. However, they all will continue to be showable at least until they turn 18, when there starts to be a chance that they will pass out of the game from old age. So that is 8 or 9 game years, at least, that they will continue to add to your showing bonus with whatever points they may have gained up to that point, and they may even gain enough to move up in their classes or even to bounce into the next higher showing level/grade where they will be at the bottom of the class for most of their remaining careers, although their points will still be adding to your bonus.
3. With sound breeding practices, each generation will have slightly higher PT scores than the previous one. The higher the PT score, the higher the amount added to the showing score each week. A 2nd generation horse with a PT score of 10.4 will probably add points in a 3-3-4 pattern, but it varies from horse to horse. A 3rd generation horse with a PT of 11.0 may add points in a 4-3-4 pattern. I had some neutered horses in HaJ 1 (a gift from a player who had been around for a long time) with PT scores between 11.4 and 11.9. They added points mostly in a 5-5-5 pattern until they turned 9 and then the weekly addition to show scores dropped markedly. They didn't level off until they were 11 or 12.

I assume you are talking about points gained from showing, not training? I had a look at mine, and my better 4yo's seem to be about 80 points, that said I'm not sure I would be culling on points at that age as as long as they have a decent PT they will be training and showing for a long time yet! With the new showing system I tend just to keep everything and don't follow really who is profitable. But I if I needed the space I wouldn't probably cull horses until they have leveled off (which happens when their age is around their PT score, although I think really high PT's level off earlier?), then I would cull those not winning (thus not gaining any more points) , and then just decide on a cut off score. Say I might cull all those leveled off in a bad place, with less than 100 points.
For each individual horse you could actually calculate how much they would earn you for the rest of their life time (assuming no points gained) and see if they are worth keeping from that. But that's a little too much work for me! Again I wouldn't do it until they look like they are leveled off (their score from showing will remain pretty much the same at this point, and if they are consistently coming last or nearly then they won't be gaining any more points)

Kintara that makes sense! I just have so many and need to get down some bc I can't keep barn space. I was looking at some over 9 with under 100 points etc. It's like there is now way they will be a 200+horse soon.

I was just checking out some of my foundation draft horses, and some of the information in my previous post seems to be outdated. These horses are adding much more than 3 points per training, much to my amazement. What I wrote before was based on my experience when I was starting out playing HaJ 1 and manually showing every thing before I opted for a Level 5 upgrade with auto show. (now the Premium upgrade)
Thanks, Ammit! I've been merrily going along letting auto show do the work and never noticed this adjustment before.
