Mares quality not advancing? Should I cull?
-
I have a mix of red and yellow papered foundation mares. I am finally starting to get 4th gen foals and still getting mostly red fillies with only a couple blues so far. My main foundation stallion is a Hidden Gates boy papered B. Up until last season I was using a superior to sire B stud from a C papered Sire for my 2nd gen girls and a superior to sire B 3rd gen stud as well. What should I do to advance my mare quality?

I am having trouble tracing down your lines to find the fourth generation - too many dead ends. Do you have the fourth gen separated out somehow that you could share? The few I've found do seem to be progressing slowly, but not abnormally enough to say out of the ordinary without seeing a lot more of them.

Here are the 4th gen foals. I only have a handful of them right now.

My personal goals are Yellow-Red-Blue-Blue-Gold and C-B-A-A-Star. Many others (and I used to!) have a slightly more relaxed standard, somewhere between that and Yellow-Red-Red-Blue-Blue-Blue-Gold and C-B-B-A-A-A-Star. In your shoes, I would cull at least all 3rd level of Reds (yellow-red-red-red) as a start. (Culling can be spaying or moving them to a "breed for spay/gelds only" line). After that, go through all your 2nd level of Reds and look at their foals. If they've had four Red/B foals and nothing higher papered, cull. If they've had Blue/A foals, then keep them on as your main breeding line.Bluegrass #143376 * Specializing in Iced Axiom (ExPro Cobs) and Iced Phantoms (PF Riding Ponies)

I used to have slightly relaxed standards about papering - mares could be Yellow Red Red Blue Blue Gold, and stallions could be C B B A A Star. Not anymore since I am now consistently getting blue papered 3rd gen girls and A papered 3rd gen boys.
So now my standards have gotten more tight. For mares, it is now Yellow Red Blue Blue Gold. Stallions must be C B A A Star, and naturally they must be superior to sire. -
All your 3rd gens are red/B (edit: I saw there is a few blues, so I'd start spaying red gen3's once you have a few blues), I would be expecting A/Blue by then. I'd definitely only use an A papered gen3 stallion, no B's at that level.
I expect my 2nd gen stallions to at least be superior to a B papered foundation, this is definitely possible even with C/Yellow foundation parents. So I'd start by expecting a bit more from your 2nd gens, and then hopefully you can start getting more A/Blue by gen3. Do you use the pastures? -
Sounds like you'll get there then! Do you have SBA? Can't remember if it's part of a basic upgrade, that weeds out a few!

No SBA is only a premium feature unfortunately.
