Some additional stuff, as I've had it explained to me:
If you have a basic upgrade or premium upgrade, you can paper horses using the test "Breeding inspection."
Foundation horses can either fail papering or paper Yellow (for mares) or C (for stallions). Exceptionally Perfect or Exceptional Producing foundations will paper Red (for mares) or B (for stallions), because they have 105% breeding ability.
Papering ONLY refers to breeding ability, which is separate from showing ability and performance testing (PT).
Most people use paper levels to gauge their horses' quality generation to generation, so they like foundations to paper C, then the next generation to paper B, then A, A again, then *Star. Or Yellow-Red-Blue-Blue-*Gold for mares. Breeding foundation C to foundation Yellow, or 3rd gen A to 3rd gen Blue, etc., is considered the best way to breed because if you breed uneven paper levels, more of your foals will be altered automatically by "Breeding advice."
Yeesh, that's a lot to throw at you. It's a complicated game, though- it helps to ask lots of questions!
