Snowflake genes?
-
Is there a specific genetic combination that causes the snowflake pattern in appaloosas? I've looked at quite a few of them and can't seem to find one if there is.
-
It's a hidden gene. Same as the varnish gene. If I remember right snowflake is a mutation on the varnish gene.
-
Appaloosas used to have the Varnish gene a long time ago, but when more information came out about the Lp gene, Ammit updated the Appaloosa genes so it no longer shows Varnish because it's been shown that all Appaloosas varnish. So the old Varnish gene was outdated and now varnish is hidden.

For the snowflake gene to express on a horse; the horse must have two copies of the snowflake gene as well as at least one copy of the LP gene.ID 213454
