Would anyone be able to point me towards some horses, or the defining characteristics, of snowflakes versus like a leopard appaloosa or a large spotted blanket? I'm having a hard time differentiating them and I think I'd like to get into breeding them.

Snowflakes have literal flakes. They can also be blanketed or spotted. This colt is snowflake as you can see on his neck.

Thank you both so much! This little girl was one of the main reasons I've gotten so tripped up. I'd initially thought she was a snowflake(as you can see by her name lol), but now I'm not really sure.

And got this foal. If the mare really is a snowflake, would that just mean that the roan is covering up the snowflake? Or is the mare just not actually a snowflake?

What you are seeing on the mare is just normal Varnishing. Snowflake is much more defined and dynamic. Sometimes, albeit rarely, foundations can be created with a hidden copy of snowflake. But as i said, it's very rare. Your girl is most likely just a normal appy

Also, roan won't hide the snowflake spots :) So you will still be able to tell

Thank you! At least I got a het filly out of the pairing that passed SBA. So maybe I'll be able to get some snowflake foals out of her.

No problem! If you breed her to a homozygous snowflake stud when she comes of age, you will have a higher chance of getting a hom snowflake baby out of her :) Good luck!
