Looking for Advice About Having Too Many Lines
  • I've been breeding silver black sabino splash ponies for many RL years and I really love my lines from this project. However, a few years ago I started to dabble in livers/chocolate pallies and pearls in the form of two different lines. I'm trying to keep up with the monthly breeding seasons but I think I have too many lines and it bothers me that I can't breed all of my mares. My barns feel more unorganized than they've ever been! So I'm just wondering what you guys would do if you were in my position. Would you keep the DP line or the pearl line? Would you combine the DP and pearl lines? Would you just get rid of both of these "pet project" lines? I think I know what I would like to do but I would love to see your ideas in case I'm not thinking outside of the box. :)

  • For me, it's about having sire lines and making sure that the stallions from those respective lines having the specific genes to carry on. For example, I have a sire line going with Splash M. I just make sure that the boys I use from that sire line has Splash M. But other than that, I don't keep the lines separate. I just chuck 3 boys from each generation into their respective pastures and click breed. I find that the more I mix the lines up, the more fun color combinations I get. But that's just for me.

That's an example from the Splash M sire line.
  • I have lots of fun by putting all sorts of genes in a pool, breed, and see what I get. I breed even generations, and focus on quality, but love all the possible genetic combinations and variations I get by this method.
I would not had time to play if I didn't do it this way.
  • Chocolate Pearl looks really nice, but of you like the smooth dark color of the liver you might want to check out that color on the search. Pearl really dilutes the color.
  • But the most important thing is what makes the game fun for YOU. If you are unsure about your lines at the moment, why not try to breed them together and see if you like the result? If not, you can always separate them again, or do something else with them :)

  • @Forestshadow I'm actually swimming in superior stallions (which is awesome, don't get me wrong) so this sounds like a great way to cull some! I usually keep stallions that are close to my goals if they are superior, but I bet it would be more helpful to just keep the ones that are already the color I'm breeding for.
@Herzeloyde I think I will try to combine this season and see if that makes it a little easier! That is an excellent idea.
@bluchrystals I have ~10-20 chocolate palomino pearls that I really love, but only 1 or 2 liver chestnut pearls. I think I would like to breed the choc. palomino pearls more so than the liver pearls but I guess I'll have to experiment a little more to be able to tell what I like. The funny thing is that I love black pearl the best and I only have one of those. :))

Thanks for all of the ideas! You guys are the best. :) This is probably the first time I've really felt overwhelmed so I'll try to mix it up this season to restore the fun.

Personally all of my lines will eventually merge,
  • @bluchrystals You should do it! It looks lovely :x

  • I totally know how you feel! I started this account focused largely on flaxen liver chestnuts, but I’d keep her Flaxens, her Sty, etc. I’ve really narrowed things down and have culled a ton of mares and studs that aren’t exactly flaxen liver chestnuts or chocolate palominos. I’ve added all of my favorite genes to that line and I’m working on bringing it together (satin, Kit M, nd1, Splash M, w10, w3, w8, Mushroom - in any combo). Definitely a project in the works years into it!

I also have a silver black Chinchilla line, but again, I’m strict. Colts must be homozygous and superior to sire and I’m slowly culling my het Chinchilla mares.

I also have a ton of Fantasy lines going, so my goal is to blend them all and get super flashy horses - Watercolor, Nexus, Axiom RBG, Wrong Warp, Splash M, Ice 2/5/8/9/13/14/15... and I just finished up my 2 y/o Nacre stallion to add in. No specific goal, but the majority are silver black/grullo (Watercolors can be any base to stay intact).

With so many projects I’ve found it helps tremendously to revisit your horses, do some very thorough culling, and if you find yourself overwhelmed, start blending lines. :)

  • For me organization is key.

I have my horses named with prefixes so I can quickly run down the list and horses are grouped together with the same colour lines to put in pastures to breed.

When I first started playing I bred black tobis and then added chocolate palominos (before chocolate palominos were labeled as such) and Grullos I felt too scattered and couldn’t breed all my mares so I cut the black and palomino lines because I loved the steel grey colours of my Grullos. I still only breed for grullos to this day but my goal is now grullo with white patterns. A few years ago I was feeling very uninspired by my horses so I went through my herd and listed the patterns I had in them and ranked them by how much I loved them. To the top 2 I added a new name indicator (#1 choice nexus got 2 letters (NX) at the beginning and #2 kit promoter got 2 letters on the end (kp) so neither would get blended together or mixed around if they both ended up on one horse.

Those became my priority breeders and the other horses were my filler herd that I used to top up my pastures to get more het. Horses.

Now I have a well established herd I’ve added Axiom and plaid. I’m thinking of switching the kp to the beginning now that it’s grown.

I’ve been getting stricter with my stud requirements. For the longest time consistent superior ASB passed Grullos was good enough. Then I started only keeping 3 colts from each sire although usually only the ones I liked the patterns off were actually bred.

Now I’ve been snipping any grullos that weren’t EE DD and in my kp line I’ve been snipping any het kit horses.
Breeding even generation Grullos with KP, Axiom RBG & Wrong Warp, Chinnchilla, Onyx, Phantom Autumn, Bats, Ghosts, Pumpkins, Skulls & Spiders, Plaid, Watercolour genes
  • I started with Appies and its grown from there lol
Now I have snowflake line, and BBtS line and a no snowflake just appie on appie line; which is originally what I started with.

I had to condense my Mach and Mushroom into a restricted line, not sure how that is going to turn out ... have to see. I wasn't breeding me Mach at all, kinda forgot about them, but with the passing of my foundation stallion and all my 2nd gens getting on I figured I'd better do something, but didn't want to mingle them too much with the other because they are a restricted gene.

I had my splash 2 and 3's separate from my KIT, but they are now back into the KIT line, with a added White 10, thrown in for good measure. I was breeding with SB2 as my main, now adding in a bit more of the splash. I am trying to weed out the White 20 a bit as most of my KITs are totally white.

My satin I broke down and separated because I kept loosing them, so I have just the appies that could have ND1 and Mushroom and a different barn that has everything else ... its a pattern grab bag in there.
I have a few ND1 that I am throwing in, just to miggle up the genes, but sticking to the pattern rule.

  • Just wanted to give a quick update and thank you guys for the advice! I bred my chocolate mares to my pearl stallions (the pearl mares were already bred before I posted this) and I got some fun results. I still need to heavily cull the newly merged lines again but I think I'm on the right track now. And I got my first gold for this new line by breeding one of the DP mares to a stallion I don't use much so maybe I can get it on par with my older lines where I am occasionally getting 4th gen golds and stars. :)
She's not the shiniest and her PT is poor for a 5th gen but foals like this encourage me to try new things on this game.
