Varnish gene?
-
I have a horse that seems to have the varnish gene, but I'm not too sure. Can someone who is more familiar with it help me out? here is a link to the horse https://www.huntandjump.com/horse.php?horseid=8107033

You are correct. Varnish (Vrn) is no longer displayed in a horse's genes, however every Appaloosa (Lp) colored horse will varnish to an extent, and at varying rates. What questions did you have about varnish?Go boldly, where no App has gone before!
-
Can only appaloosas have the gene? How can you track how fast a horse will varnish?
-
Because there is no real life varnish gene. Varnishing is part of LP. Some horses have other genes that suppress or promote it.Need to contact me? Read this first.
I sometimes get busy and miss things. If your private message, question, etc. gets missed please ping me so I can follow up with you. I am also always happy to explain or clarify. (HAJ does not have a customer service email, please send me a forum message! )

So it would be more a matter of researchers finding out which genes suppress or promote the varnishing rate.
