DP
-
Sorry, back to back posts.
Can show me different horses with DP? I’m having a hard time knowing when a horse has it unless it’s obviously. -
Bays (with hom Ssty):
G2 Dark Mountain Chime
Risen from the Ashes
(silver bay)
G2 y Calamity
(with nd1)
Lady Elizabeth
(no Ssty, hom DP wild bay)
RS CD Blood Ruby
Buckskin (no dun):
G2 Anthracite
(with dun, het DP)
G2 o Blackberry Cobbler
Plus all chocolate palominos and liver chestnuts have DP. Finding a black liver hom DP stud and looking at his offspring can also give you a good idea, as they would all be at least het DP! :D
:)) all of these examples are bays and buckskins. But I also have a lot of different livers and chocolate palominos if pictures of those would help.Post edited by Heartwood at 2019-04-01 07:17:31ID: 247225

Here's my homozygous DP stud. You can't tell much from his color but his foals may help some.

This is one of my hom DP Liver boys. He looks black but has the double ee for being red based.

I'm gonna jump in here with some confusion I have with some of my chestnuts. If I'm reading the DP chart correctly, one copy of DP produces the same coat color as one copy of sooty? These are a few of the horses that have gotten me tripped up:
This gal seems plenty light enough to say that she does not have DP.
RS Texas Brindle
But these two have me confused into thinking they might be het DP? Neither of them have sooty, but they're definitely darker chestnut.

The last Texas Tea boy might be. It's hard to say for sure on SS chestnuts, because they can look either a little browner or a little redder, or both.
I don't think G2 Tall boy is, though. Hom sooty or het sooty het Dp chestnuts are usually deep, rich red.
Here's a homozygous sooty, non Dp chestnut:
Sierra Madre S
And a heterozygous sooty, heterozygous Dp chestnut. I know she's Dp because she's produced two homozygous Dp foals:
First Love S
They're not all quite that dark, but they should be pretty rich red.
Another het Dp hom sooty bay:
2 O Kawasaki SwS
And a het Dp SS mare I did not suspect, but then surprise! Liver foal. Roan can really confuse things!:

@Daxwulf I'm not sure if you've seen this older post already or not, but there is a link to the chestnut DP ninja/cheatsheet and I posted an explanation on how to spot DP on chestnuts, with many pictures for comparison:
https://www.huntandjump.com/forum/discussion/comment/79172
Your first two brindle girls and your 2gen boy Tall Boy do not have DP. Tall boy is darker than your brindle girls, yes, but that is because he has 1 sty gene. If you look in the thread I linked, you'll see that a stysty chestnut is often darker and a bit more reddish. Therefore you know your Tall Boy is 'normal'.
I must say your TexasTea girl is a bit harder to say if she has DP or not by just looking at her. Brindle adds lighter stripes or darker stripes to the coat, so it's hard to see. Best way to test is to breed her, preferably to a known homo DP stud.
You've already done that and got this foal:
Holiday Bliss
As explained in the post I linked to, this foal is homo DP. Why? Because she has only 1 sty, but her color name (and looks) are liver. (As explained in the above post, to become a liver a horse has to have 3 darkening genes, of which at least 1 has to be DP). Thus you know that she must have 2 copies of DP to be a liver. Therefore mom must be a DP carrier as well!
@Sherwood, yes roan makes it harder to see! However, if you compare her legs and head with other non-sty chestnuts, you see she is much darker (more orangish, less pinkish). She looks more like a single sty chestnut so by that you know she is het DP too!

@Master StablesMS Thanks! I'd completely forgetton that I bred her to a liver previously, and I just pulled all of my mares that I thought might be het DP and found a hom DP stud to pair them with.Thanked by 1MasterStablesMS

Haha thank you guys! I just experienced it a lot I guess and rather like to share what I know than keep it for myself. But I think there is only 1 true DP master: that's Ammit!HJ1 160524

Wow. So much info, I'm learning but yeah. Lol. I'm so glad you all shared it. The roan thing threw me for loop.
