Breeding better quality
-
What are the benefits to breeding two pairs that are both boosted?
Also what do you find is the best method to breeding better foals that stay intact?
My barn got hit with alot of spay/neutering this time and looking for advice. Thanks :) -
The best method for me, is to breed even. It's not easy all the time, but It's always beneficial. When breeding to foundations, personally it's best to find simple rank 5 ones. Preferably excellent producers. I find the more simple in color, are the easiest to pass? And always be careful with whites. Make sure you know the lethality and the white factor. When breeding to public mares/studs, look at their other offspring. Did they pass all testing, did they score well? Final tip, If both parents score well over 10, the foals usually do too, and they're more likely to pass testing (I guess).
Sorry if that's confusing :)) -
Breeding boosted horses is like breeding 2 horses of the next generation up. If you (fully - 5%) boost your foundation horses they are basically equivalent to 2nd generations. So your foals have a head start. They will officially be 2nd generation, but will have the abilities of a 3rd generation!
The best way to insure more intact foals is to use your pastures. Make sure the mares and stallions have similar papers regardless of what ACTUAL generation they are. If you are shooting for even pedigrees you will need to be a bit more careful of which paper levels you breed together.

Don't forget, neutered horses are the best friends of your stable. They train about a year longer than intact horses of the same approximate PT score; the only expense they create is the entry fees to their shows (since we don't get charged for grain, hay, veterinarians [unless breeding intact horses], or farriers), and they keep on gathering points to increase your showing bonus.
Intact horses tempt you to breed them often, which can be fairly expensive when hand breeding to very expensive when using the Advanced Breeding Lab, to extremely expensive when you're creating and implanting embryos. Unless they're in a pasture, they can be shown, however, so there is the potential for having them help increase your showing bonus.Post edited by SandyCreekAcres at 2019-04-07 19:16:59 -
There is no intact rate benefit to breeding boosted horses. If horses are boosted in quality, they may throw foals of better quality but the foals also have to be better to stay intact. So no benefit from the getting more intact point of view.
Personally I try not to boost too high, I will boost lined stallions so they are superior to sire, or boost mares to my minimum standards for that generation if she was some special colour, and I will often boost foundation stallions to exceptional level. But I personally don't boost foundations to paper 'A' say, I will use boosted stock occasionally but don't really hold them to a higher level than the rest of my stock, they just make it easier to meet my minimum requirements!
Pastures are definitely your friend for getting better intact rates
