learning het or hm DP and colors
-
Yea, I bred my first livers, liver red dun, and choc pal. I also ended up with 2 browns who are so dark they look black and a silver black who is gorgeous but looks super super dark choc pal. I can kinda get a rough idea on the het and hm DP on some of them but on the others im completely clueless. Im reading what I can find on DP but I still need some help learning and recognizing it in both forms and on other colors. These are my babies. Any help deciphering them is appreciated.

First of all since your stud for all of these kiddos was a Freaky Friday (which are all hom DP), that means that they are all at least het DP!
All of your livers and the chocolate pal look het DP to me, hom DP hom Ssty livers would look black, like their father does. The bays also look to be het to me, but I'm really bad at being able to tell with browns (and not sure about silver black), so I'll leave those to someone else :DID: 247225

I don't think I knew he was hom DP, or I forgot. Ok, so all livers are het DP if they don't look black? I just figured the bays missed out and the browns were het but im learning, lol. The silver black has me crazy lol. Thanks for the help.

:) Glad I could help, I have a few silver blacks that I'm trying to figure out myself, lol.
So yes, that part is right! Black livers are always both hom Ssty and hom DP. Other livers can be either 1. hom Ssty and het DP or 2. hom DP and het Ssty. But they need to have at least 3 darkening genes. So if you have a liver with only one Ssty, that means that it is hom DP.
Hom DP liver red duns are a little different, since the dun lightens them a lot, but usually looking at the legs and nose can be a tip off.
I will say that this sort of dark almost purplish color is what regular bays usually look like with DP:

The other two bay foals that look like this are het DP, but aren't so dark because they are only het Ssty.
