Welcome to Hunt and Jump. Yes, it's a very complex game, but don't worry to much about it. It takes time to get comfortable with it, but we'll be glad to help you learn, as buttrflyfreefall has said.
The FAQ covers a lot of the basics. Another help is the list of challenges you should be seeing. Accomplishing each one will help you work through a lot of the aspects of the game and will give you a reward for doing each one as well.
My daughter began playing in 2010, and I watched over her shoulder as she played for 8 months before I started to play myself in 2011. I still learn new things about the game occasionally, even after all this time.
