Training to show
  • I finally got the papers on my two Welsh ponies and have a lofty goal of taking them to the local Welsh show in August. One, Bree, I have had for a decade and he is broke to ride and drive. I just managed to finally get ahold of Bree's full sister, Hwin, this fall. She was supposedly broke to ride and drive, but after working with her, I am doubtful. SO now I need to get my training going again so that I can show them as a pair in August. They are identical palominos and move fantastically if I do say so myself so my dream of a driving team will hopefully happen. Anyone else drive their ponies?
  • Bree is the WONDER PONY! I love him to bits! You have to post Pics, MP!

  • Monsterpony! Amazing to "see you" again! I miss the old players, this really made my day <3<br />
So fun to hear about your driving project. I'd love to see photos or videoes. Driving is so fun. I don't have a horse to drive at the moment, but we are doing a lot of long rein dressage. He really loves it, so I have toyed with the idea to buy him a carriage and a harness.
Two of his 3 year old daughters are in the process of training to become driving horses.

I really hope your ponies will do well in a pair. I love Welsh ponies!
  • Beautiful pair, good luck with your showing this year!

  • Beautiful! I love the pink halter/rope :D
  • What a gorgeous pair they are!

I have driven quite a few of the ponies and horses we use in the therapeutic riding program I volunteer with. Not as pairs, however, only single horse driving. My favorite was a 13.1 hand haflinger mare that I worked with from the time she was a few hours old back in 1994. We didn't start driving her until she was 22, but she took to the new discipline as if she'd been doing it all her life. Sadly, we had to put her down earlier this year because of a tumor on her left ovary that gave her a skyrocketing testosterone level and studly behavior issues.

Others I've driven were a miniature horse/Tennessee Walker cross, some off the track standard breds, two or three percheron or draft cross horses, and a black pony that is some sort of mixed breed. I haven't driven our current miniature horse, being too large for the little guy to haul around.

  • How do you cross a mini with a TWH?
  • Oh two lovely ponies MP! My landlord breeds welsh ponies and always has at least one or two in harness!

  • :))

That was always my question, too. We joked about the dam standing in a ditch or the sire finding a ladder somewhere.

  • The walker/mini cross that SandyCreek and I knew was the result of a pasture oops. According to what we were told, the Amish family that owned his parents put the walker mare into the pasture with their mini stud for company, thinking that there was no way he could get her pregnant. 11 months or so later, there was a beautiful bay tobiano colt, proving that where there's a will there's a way. We figure the mare either stood in a deep ditch or lay down for him.

  • Hey, it's a known fact that they had to build a ramp for Northern Dancer to service his mares since he was so short! https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northern_Dancer
