Advice on GMT Prospects
-
I'm very new to GMTing horses here so I was hoping for some help, I have a Rhythm of Four mare I love and that has produced lots of nice babies for me:
Black Rhythm
But for her age would it be worth spending some money to GMT her? I don't plan on putting much on, just tobiano and MAYBE sooty plus if I have funds.
I have a 2G stallion who is 2 that I might also try to GMT if the age is a problem on my foundation:
MS2 Vanni Exponential sP
I was hoping to add tobiano but unfortunately neither of his parents had it. Would adding another nd1 be worth it (as in would it make a huge difference in color/would it be visible/etc.)? Would adding another splash gene make the white more visible? Is there a advantage to GMTing mares vs. stallions?
I'm sure these are silly and basic questions but I'm very new to this :) Thank you everybody!

No questions are silly :D for your RoF girl, the only way to GMT her would be to yum her foal. For your boy, nd1 is totally up to you it will lighten his color a bit except leave a darkened shoulder patch and leg markings. Nd1 can be pretty popular with some people though if you ever wanted to sell straws. Splash would increase the white markings on his legs and face but you can get more white by adjusting his White factor too if you don’t want too much “Splashiness” hope that helps!

@Nikkel666 Thank you so much! I've been leaving towards GMTing that stallion for a little bit but didn't know what would be best. Would the S+ he has effect how the nd1 interacts or how light his color gets?

You can't add another ND1 to the stallion as his mother doesn't carry ND1..
-
@Bambi207 so he will only be able to have the same amount of copies as his parents do?
-
That is correct
When looking at the gene sequence, foals get the first letter from their father and the second letter from their mother... So for example, an Ee aA horse will get the E/a from Dad and the e/A from mom -
@Bambi207 I knew I had lots to learn about this process :) Thank you! So since both parents had splash I could add another copy to him right?Post edited by kgstable at 2019-05-14 22:05:34

You can't add another regular splash, as his sire doesn't have it; but you can add splash 2 (the PAXc70y thing). I think it would give you more white. You could also replace the sabino 2 with white 3 (since the sire has both), and that would -probably- be more white.
As for mares vs stallions, usually I only GMT studs. That way I can distribute the gene I like much faster and more reliably, since I have 50 chances every season, instead of one.
Some players do GMT mares, but it makes more sense if you have a premium upgrade and lots of hbs, so you can collect eggs.
Congrats on a v pretty colt, by the way! :x -
@SherwoodStables Thank you! I was looking around and decided I'd probably end up adding the PAX splash to him :) Thank you again! Any other advice would be sooo much appreciated thank you!

You can gmt old horses, it's up to you as you might lose them soon. But you can't gmt a horse that has living descendants. And yes as far the lined colt goes, you can only gmt what the parents have
